General Intentions

Still keeping with the graduate side of things, I intent to visit the graduate office of SDSU and UCSD.
Hopefully, the graduate offices can direct me to professors and graduate student that could help in understanding why the music graduate student do what they do.

With these references, I ask to interview then. I will ask questions like how long have you studied music? who introduced you to music? What did you parents/grandparents listen to? where did you grow up? growing up, what sort of music did you listen to? who where/are your favorite artist/musicians? what are you currently studying? what type of music is your favorite to perform? other than music, what other art forms do you enjoy? etc.

With this information, I can understand why the graduate student decided to go to college and study music.

To counter act this information, I may look into asking the same questions to musicians that did not go to college/graduate school to study music. Comparing the two worlds may or may not lead to a conclusion why the grad students/professors I interview went to school.

After 4/18 class

I proposed my topic of music programs in the three schools in San Diego, I was suggested in making my topic a bit more specific. I think I am going to focus on graduate music programs in order to make my study even more specific.

While looking at the websites, I believe that USD does not have a graduate program in music.
This may or may not affect my study only because it will make my pool of people to interview.

New Ideas

Because I am currently a part of Asayake Taiko here at UCSD, it would make a lot f sense to research the music of taiko.

The two topic I am most leaning is EDM and Rave culture and now North American Taiko.

Journal 1

As of right now there a few subjects that interest me.

The first is the life of a graduate student. I want to know the motivations, desires, any factor that lead to the decision to study music. I am thinking that this would require a lot of interviews of many different grad students and  I am also thinking not just from UCSD, but from USD and SDSU.

My second idea is the club/rave culture. I find it interesting the strong association with drugs that this entails, especially raves. This reminds me of the 60's rock and roll culture, like the Beatles and their association with LSD and other drugs.

Third idea is the Western Music Concerts. In this i would like to know who attends these events, why do they attend these events, and what behaviors involve this, we all know how we are supposed to behave in a concert but why?
